Design Thinking and South Indian kitchen’s idli batter

Does Design Thinking and South Indian kitchen’s idli batter have a connection?

A definite yes!

The person who conceptualised the batter to make tiffin recipes must have been a great Design Thinker!

By mixing lentils and rice in the 1/3 and 2/3 proportions, one has a batter that can be used to make three recipes – idli, dosa and uthappam on subsequent days. This not only saves time for food preparation but is healthy as well with its protein and carbohydrate content.

Design Thinking is present in how we have designed our lives both consciously and subconsciously.

“Design Thinking for businesses is an extension of day- to-day living.” This article appeared in Smart CEO, post the Leadership Unplugged event and it rightly captures the need for Design Thinking.

Fight scenes even in animated movies – responses

Yesterday, I questioned the fight scenes even in animated movies made for children on Facebook and LinkedIn. I received a lot of insights from your comments. I am documenting a few of the observations here.

1. Fight scenes train a child’s mind for better defence.
2. Fight scenes build ‘violence’ as a key method of resolving any difference of opinions/perspectives/expectations.
3. Violence sells better among audiences which means we as developed human being still love ‘animal’ instinct of physical force over logical conversations (dialogue) to resolve difference of opinions/perspectives.

Somewhere I am confused with our ‘expressed’ behaviour i.e. we must live with love as a key uniting force of humanity vs. ‘suppressed’ behaviour of liking physical dominance.

Please share your thoughts on this dichotomy of our behaviours.

If you can dream it, you can do it.

Girls from government schools can do it too!

Poorna is the youngest girl to climb the Everest at the age of 13 years and 10 months. She did this feat in 2014. It’s unimaginable to even think about such a feat.

Now, Rahul Bose had made a movie on Poorna – a must watch!

There is a story of the Secretary of Social Welfare, Praveen Kumar who believed in education and Poorna. His single act helped inspiring thousands of school students in Andhra Pradesh.

You may like to watch the movie. It’s like Dangal but not made by Aamir Khan.

My diary – Problem solving |7th April, 2018

  1. Thinking process is an outcome of the type of problems you are solving.
  2. Design Thinking is about better understand the problem with the customer at the center and observe patterns and connecting the dots. It helps in finding new solutions with an open mind and group thinking.
  3. Visualisation or dreaming is about changing the landscape of problem solving i.e. moving out of the forest and creating a structured landscape.
  4. Frameworks help accelerate problem solving.

Learning about self-image

We use 3 words synonymously – self-image, self-belief and self-confidence but they have their unique meanings.
#1 Self-belief – provides the decision matrix for good or bad
#2 Self-confidence – absence of fear
#3 Self-image – visual image of ‘what I want to see myself in this world’

Among the top 3, it’s self-image that drives your behaviour, the learning capacity and decision making capabilities, which in turn is an indicator of high performance.

Our Human Resource processes focus on skill development rather than changing self-image. Once self-image is changed, the person will acquire the needed skills himself.

The power of simplicity

Nature has just 4 elements – carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Plants use just 3 elements and the energy of sunlight to create glucose. Animals consume glucose and release carbon dioxide.

So many variants of life (products) have been created using just 4 elements. This is the simplicity of nature at its peak.

To design something highly self-propelling, we need to search for that simplicity.
