The power of together

I observed that various NGOs are doing selfless work in the development of our society. They are doing this work with very frugal money. Many of them are very creative in using this money for the highest impact.

Most of the time, they are alone. We in the industry have exclusive industry bodies like FICCI, CII, MMA, Nasscom, TIE etc., which provide us with networking platforms for learning best practices from each other as well the opportunities to influence government policies.

I want to know if any such platforms exist for positively impacting NGOs.

Or

Is there an opportunity to create an all India platform on the lines of industry platforms like Confederation of Social Impact Organisations (CSIO) with chapters at district levels in India?

My Diary – conflict resolution vsl Legal resolution

During Mission Samriddhi’s Summit 6 at Wardha, I met Shubha from Banwasi Sewa Ashram at Sonbhadra district, UP. They are working in that tribal area among 400 villages since 1967.

I learnt

  1. That for several years, there have been no legal cases from these villages being filed in the court. In case a few cases do reach the court, they are withdrawn and settled within the village.
  2. Since legal cases are a major ‘time, money and energy’ wasters of our society. Their response was very innocent and wise.
    A. Most of the conflicts in the villages start from very small differences.
    B. Villages need a few trustable, selfless people with the ability to listen.
    C. Most of the time ‘the person who is wrong, knows it in his heart’ about his wrong. He can’t hide that wrong within his own set of people. What he needs is a ‘listening’.
    D. Banwasi Sewa Ashram’s experience says that once the ‘Panch’ – respected group of villagers within or outside the village (different from elected representatives) listens to both sides, the conflict resolution becomes much simpler. Both parties can select their Panch who they believe will be fair like the arbitrator system.

To solve large cases in the legal system, shall we start a dialogue on building competency of conflict resolution at the source?

Sebastian Kurz and his political achievements

Austria, the headquarters of one of our key customers, Raffeisein Bank, has selected Sebastian Kurz as its Head of State.

He is just 31 years old.

At the age of 28, he became the youngest Foreign Minister.

As a 24-year old, he became the Minister of Integration.

Movie Ramanujan

I was watching the movie ‘Ramanujan’ – the person who knew infinity. I enjoyed the movie. It very well captured history.

One thing that touched me more than Ramanujan was his wife Janaki. She just waited and waited and after his early death at age of 32, she completed her life as a widow.

I was not sensitive to this aspect of gender inequality.

5 lamps inside you – Diwali

While we all light up our houses, do spend some time today to light a few lamps inside you and sit in silence with your eyes closed…

Light the first lamp inside you and let it burn away your anger and/or jealousy that you may have for any one till date; see it melt away…

Light the second lamp and let it burn away unwanted greed and desires… Feel happy and content with what you have been blessed with.

Light the third lamp and let it fade away all your insecurities that you may have in your mind related to anything or financials. Just believe that God has given you life and he will surely give you enough to survive.

Light the fourth lamp and carry that lamp to each part of your body; let it burn away all your diseased cells or any diseases in making. Feel healthy as this lamp travels to each part of your body and illuminates each organ.

The fifth lamp is a miniature of the sun… Nothing but the divine light… Light it in the centre of your body and let it fill you with its warmth and love inside your whole body… Feel one with the Divine… Let the love and warmth that’s filled inside you ooze out of you through your smile, eyes, speech and body. Carry this love with you throughout the day.

Wishing you a happy Diwali!

Tanjore – 1000 years old, highest of its time at 216 feet structure of the world

I visited the Brihadeeswarar Temple or the Tanjore Temple near Trichy. Normally, we go on a temple from temple visit but this temple was more of an architectural marvel. In my perspective, it can match the architectural creation of the Taj Mahal since it was created six hundred years before the Taj Mahal.

A few observations

  1. The largest Siva Temple with integrated Brahma and Vishnu structures. The lingam is a monolithic and 29 ft. tall.
  2. Fully constructed without any binding material like cement or its equivalent.
  3. 1000 year structure built by granite slabs, cut and interlocked to create this masterpiece.
  4. The nearest quarry of granite stones is over 80 kms. Thus, all granite was transported 1000 years back at that time with the available transportation technologies.
  5. The structure is vertically aligned i.e. the center of the Lingam is perfectly aligned to the center of the top stone, a perfect zero degree. The stone at the very top at 200 ft. weighs 80 tons.
  6. This structure was created in just 6 years in 1010 by Raja Raja Cholan.
  7. Tanjore is famous for its unique gold leaf paintings, music and dance and bronze sculptures.

My Diary on Gandhi Jayanti

In all living forms, science has discovered genes – which is the encoding of repeating itself.

Question – Is there something in all living forms that says, “I am different”?

My observation is that ‘I am different’ is not only a characteristic of humans but also in the lowest of the living form – plants.

  1. Each plant has different shapes of leaves. This differentiation is not required for producing food.
  2. A few plants grow vertically and other grow horizontally. This differentiation is not required for survival.
  3. Every flower produces a unique design of flower – from the shape of sepals, petals or arrangement of sepals or petals, even colour patterns are unique. This differentiation is not required for reproduction.
  4. The fruit produced by each plant is unique with different textures and tastes. This differentiation is not required for anything except the ‘nature of giving’.

All of the above 4 elements are not required for repetition or reproduction. Each plant or tree need not express so differently to reproduce themselves which is related to gene theory.

I want to know if there is anyone working on the Theory of being different.

My Diary – Varanasi, 22nd Sep 2017

Yesterday, I visited Varanasi for the inauguration of Utkarsh Small Finance Bank. We are their complete digital core banking technology partner.

Few observations about Varanasi and around

  1. One of the oldest cities with a somewhat recorded history from 1100 BC
  2. Birthplace of the Indian scriptures
  3. Birthplace of Jainism and Buddhism
  4. Very talented craftsmanship
  5. Very old architecture of large temples
  6. It’s on the bank of the Ganga river with lots of water and fertile land for agriculture giving 3 crops per year.
  7. Even in the modern era, Banaras Hindu University and Allahabad University are much earlier universities in the State, including IIT Kanpur nearby.

This translates into the

  1. Rich intellectual capacity of the city
  2. Rich culture of learning as a society
  3. Rich natural resources

This combination is the ultimate recipe for a highly developed city as well as the ‘world’s greatest tourism spot’ in line with Paris or Rome.

My question to this group is – what is holding back this city of Varanasi to flower and fruition?

The purpose of this curious question is not to blame anyone but to try and understand the

  1. Elements of social and economic development
  2. Elements of individual and social thinking
  3. Role of vision vs. contentment

Trees: selfless and non-attached behaviour

I was observing the trees in front of the windows in the morning after the short rains. All the leaves of the trees just had a nice wash. Two parrots flew in and sat on the branches and started enjoying the fruits of the tree. Another Myna flew in and was collecting sticks for her nest from the tree and located a space on the tree itself to create her home.

I have witnessed the calmness of the tree, year on year. I enjoyed its growth over the last 10 years since we shifted our house.

Today, I realised its existence as well as growth is truly selfless, which can be extended to all trees.

Part 2 – Celebrating selfishness

Nature has created the animal kingdom to support plants like earthworms, bees, butterflies, birds etc. They coexist and create a symbiotic and healthy community.

I don’t know at what point in time or why nature has created animals one bigger than the other.

Today, we celebrate animals like the lion. I don’t know why? We know it’s lazy, survives by killing others in the jungle, generates fear in everyone, and does not contribute anything to the forest’s development.

Still we celebrate the brute power of the lion or tiger. What do we enjoy – the pity of the deer, cow or goats?

I don’t know what emotions drive this behaviour of humans?
